Commercial stair removal during a renovation
SiteClear planning resources / Reviewed 11 October 2026
Compare the removal extents
| Proposed change | Scope question |
|---|---|
| Renew surrounding finishes | Does the stair itself remain entirely outside demolition? |
| Replace the stair | Which flight, landing and connections are included by design? |
| Change the stair location | What happens to the existing opening and adjoining rooms? |
The engineer and stair contractor establish the affected construction, support and replacement requirements. Removal does not design a new stair or determine whether an alternative route is suitable.
Illustrative building-section comparison
Before: an internal stair meets a landing beside an office corridor. One proposal retains the stair and removes only specified corridor finishes. Another replaces the flight and changes its connection under a reviewed design. The second package has different structural and receiving-trade interfaces even if the surrounding décor is the same.
Show the levels above and below, retained room boundaries and the agreed route for removed material. A plan of only the stair footprint can omit the space needed for the work and the effect on nearby circulation.
Assign the interval between stairs
The project team determines access, guarding, temporary arrangements and who controls the affected area before the replacement is complete. Those responsibilities must be resolved alongside the removal scope, not left for the next installer to discover.
Request a defined assessment
Provide the designer's drawings, stair construction information and replacement-contractor contact. Identify what stays at the landing and opening edges. Unusual dismantling, rigging and temporary works need their appropriate specialists; a broad structural service is not a promise to undertake every stair configuration.
