Replacing large equipment: plan the opening and what happens after it is used
SiteClear planning resources / Reviewed 11 October 2026
SiteClear provides concrete cutting and selective demolition for assessed building-removal packages. The equipment supplier and handling team establish transport needs; the responsible designer reviews the affected building and required opening.
Test the route before choosing an opening
Ask the equipment team to describe the outgoing and incoming equipment, including the transport arrangement and complete route. A doorway width alone does not describe turns, height changes or other restrictions along that journey.
SiteClear’s oversized-fixture route guide addresses the initial assessment. If the route requires building alteration, develop that as a separate scope rather than treating a temporary opening as an incidental part of moving the equipment.
Compare the opening’s intended life
| Access option | Building question | Following work |
|---|---|---|
| Use existing access | Can the responsible handling team use the actual route? | Identify any agreed temporary removals and reinstatement |
| Make a temporary opening | What reviewed building portion is removed for the changeover? | Temporary protection and closure after equipment handling |
| Make a permanent alteration | What finished opening does the future building need? | New framing, door or other installation and finishes |
The designer determines structural requirements and support. The cutting assessment follows the actual assembly, approved dimensions, retained elements and agreed removal conditions.
Define the handover to the equipment team
Identify what the removal contractor leaves and who checks it before the handling stage. The equipment team’s required clearance and the finished installation dimensions can be different. Resolve that distinction before the removal layout is finalised.
Machinery rigging, transport, process isolation and installation are separately assigned activities. They are not inferred from concrete cutting or selective demolition. The wider programme should show their relationship to the accepted building work.
Assign the period before the opening is closed
A temporary opening needs a responsible party for any required security, weather protection or separation between stages. The permanent closure or new installation also needs a defined owner and receiving condition.
These arrangements depend on the property and proposed work. They should be agreed as part of the project, rather than being assumed included in the opening-removal package.
| Handover | Information the next party needs | Exception to keep visible |
|---|---|---|
| Removal to equipment handling | Accepted exposed opening and authorised access arrangement | Any unfinished removal or changed condition |
| Handling to temporary protection | Confirmation that the handling stage has released the area | Equipment or routes still occupying the boundary |
| Temporary protection to closure | Current opening condition and closure contractor's access | Protection that remains necessary beside occupied areas |
For a downtown building, management may also control a shared entrance or loading route used between these stages. Name the person who accepts each transfer and who can hold it when conditions change. A transport booking alone does not close the responsibility gap between creating an opening and restoring the building boundary.
Illustrative example: temporary access for a replacement unit
This is an illustrative planning example, not a completed SiteClear project.
A facility’s handling contractor identifies that the replacement unit needs a different access arrangement. The designer reviews a temporary wall opening and specifies the building requirements. SiteClear assesses the agreed cutting and removal contribution.
The programme identifies who receives the opening for equipment handling and who provides temporary protection and final closure. The demolition package ends at its defined handover; it does not promise to move the machine or complete the reinstatement unless those tasks are separately confirmed with their providers.
Bring the route and closure plan to SiteClear
Request an assessment with the property location, equipment team’s access information and available drawings. Identify retained building elements, the intended changeover window and the parties responsible for handling and closure.
