Plan a residential renovation

Planning an interior gut across a whole house

A whole-house interior renovation needs a floor-by-floor removal map, even when the project is described as a complete gut. Useful stairs, structural elements and selected rooms may remain, while walls, ceilings and floor finishes have different stopping layers.

Compare whole-house and selected-room approaches

ApproachUseful question
Selected roomsWhere do new finishes meet untouched rooms?
Connected floorWhich corridors and shared ceilings join the work areas?
Whole-house interiorWhat construction and services remain throughout the building?

The receiving builder should describe the intended exposed condition. Removing visible finishes is different from removing every layer behind them, and an interior gut does not automatically include structural alterations.

Illustrative floor-by-floor plan

The ground floor changes kitchen and living-room arrangements; upstairs retains bedroom divisions but renews bathroom and ceiling finishes. The stair stays. A single instruction to strip the house would hide the retained bedroom walls and the different bathroom assembly.

Mark the stair junctions, floor transitions and ceilings shared by changed and retained rooms. These boundaries help the builder identify repairs or inspection points after demolition, before reconstruction begins.

Keep structure and services explicit

The responsible professionals determine wall roles, material assessments and affected services. Put unresolved questions on the removal drawing rather than assuming that a proposed open-plan layout authorises a wall to leave. Building approvals and occupancy arrangements remain property-specific decisions.

Prepare the builder's handover

Ask who inspects exposed conditions, who authorises additional removal and which contractor undertakes repairs or new installations. Bring plans for every affected floor, retained features and the builder's contact to SiteClear. No continued-occupancy or heritage-conservation promise follows from a whole-house interior scope.
