Interior demolition when office and retail uses change
SiteClear planning resources / Reviewed 11 October 2026
Office rooms becoming a showroom
An illustrative office has enclosed workrooms along the frontage and a useful staff room at the rear. The showroom design retains the staff room but opens the customer area. The removal list identifies reviewed partitions, doors and the adjoining floor and ceiling finishes.
The project team must still resolve the new use and affected systems. An open-looking proposal does not establish that the existing partitions can be removed without further assessment.
An open shop becoming a workplace
A second illustrative unit starts with an open sales floor, fixed counter and fitting rooms. The office layout needs some new rooms, so demolition may focus on the obsolete counter and fitting-room enclosure while retaining suitable areas elsewhere.
| Direction | Main comparison | Receiving-trade question |
|---|---|---|
| Office to retail | Existing divisions versus customer circulation | How will continuous finishes cross old wall lines? |
| Retail to office | Fixed shop fit-out versus new room arrangement | Which surfaces are needed before new partitions? |
Separate removal from the new use
The designer and responsible authorities establish building, fire, service and approval requirements. SiteClear assesses the physical demolition contribution, not a change-of-use approval. New partitions, services and finishes belong in the fit-out scope.
Prepare the comparison for assessment
Supply the current and proposed plans, retained support rooms and next contractor's requirements. Mark unresolved construction and service questions rather than choosing removal depth from appearance. For contractor selection, use office strip-outs or retail strip-outs; this guide explains the decision between their inherited layouts.
